On October 26, 2016 the Community Builders Sunday School class joined efforts with partnering churches to secure funding to feed the residents at the Edgecombe Red Cross relief shelter in Tarboro, NC.

While Pastor Phil was visiting with the shelter, he overheard concerns from the residents that most of the breakfast food items were high in sugar (donuts, pastries, fruit juices, etc.). In an attempt to secure a more substantial breakfast that would provide protein, calcium, and other vitamins and nutrients, the Community Builders Sunday School class worked with Bruce Smith of Smith’s Red and White Grocery Store to procure some hearty supplies. The breakfast included sausage biscuits, a case of oranges, a case of apples, and pint containers of fresh cold milk.

In addition to food items, the class put together “care packages” that included personal care items such as soap, hand sanitizer, tooth brush, tooth paste, note pad, pen, and a note of encouragement. The note explained, “We want you to know that you are not alone. We are praying for you and God loves you.” At the bottom of the note, a scripture was included from Psalm 18:2 (NLT). “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.”

The class was not only permitted to participate in distributing the food and care packages, they were allowed to mingle with the residents and minister directly. Many shared their stories of loss. Prayers took place on Red Cross cots. Pastor Phil was also able to have a prayer and devotion with some of the volunteers who willingly participated.  The next day, Pastor Phil was able to meet with individuals who had requested Bibles, and he was able to put the Word directly in their hands.

Thank you Wakeminster Baptist Church (Raleigh, NC) and Sedley Baptist Church Ladies Bible Class & the James Fox Class (Sedley, VA) for funding this relief effort. This is just the beginning of this ministry effort.  Pray for us as we continue to build relationships with those in need, and as we discover how God is calling us to make an impact with flood victims in our community.
