When Jesus was baptized, “he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:10-11).

In Jesus’ baptism, God publicly claimed Christ as his son. In our own baptism, we publicly claim Christ as his son. In our own baptism, we publicly claim Christ as our Savior, and we are declared children of God.

This should not be a onetime event that we remember in our past. Instead, it should be the inauguration of a life lived in faith, as we live up to the calling that we claim Christ and he claims us.
