Eli was getting up in years. He had lost his enthusiasm for the work of the Lord. He had been hitting the snooze button on God. In his sleep, God reached out to the young boy Samuel, who would grow up to carry on the flame of speaking to God’s people. As one of his final remembered acts of service, Eli recognized God’s hand at work on his life, and fanned those flames into fruition.

We can learn from both examples. Like Samuel, may we listen to God’s call on our life. Like Eli, may we nurture the next generation that they may hear and respond.
